Let’s be honest, Cranky wasn’t always so… cranky.
Back in the early days, the idea for a mascot came from a pretty cheerful place. Literally. The original version of Cranky was a massive grinning ape, full of wide eyed optimism and banana fueled joy. But here’s the thing: that smile? It just didn’t fit. It was all a little too “happy go lucky” for a brand that lives on the edge, thrives in the chaos, and plays with a bite.
So Ray did what Ray does, he called in backup.
Enter Blair from Salty Seadog, an insanely talented artist (and potter, you need to check out his and his wife’s work). The brief? Simple. “Make him meaner. Give him edge.” That’s it. No design deck. No long winded briefs. Just pure creative trust.
What came back… was perfect.
That familiar scowl, the raised brow of perpetual judgment, the “don’t screw this up” stare that pierces your soul? That’s our Cranky. No edits. No revisions. Just boom, done. And from that moment on, Cranky was carved into MFD lore. Stone. Ink. Vinyl. You name it.
The timing? He came to life just before our very first product drop. We didn’t even have a full apparel lineup yet, just stickers and the itch to do more. Cranky was supposed to be a sidekick. A graphic. A maybe.
Instead, he became the backbone.
Now? He’s everywhere. You’ll find his mischievous mug on yo-yos, begleri, string packs, accessories, stickers, and behind the scenes making sure everything launches on time. He’s not just a logo. He’s the grumpy glue that holds MonkeyfingeR together.
He’s got opinions. He’s got standards. And he’s got zero patience for half finished ideas. He keeps the lab in check. He shows up in every brainstorm. He even haunts the Franken Lab when things aren’t polished enough. If something isn’t Cranky approved? It doesn’t ship.
Let’s be clear: he’s a royal pain in the ass.
